Camerton is steeped in industrial history from the days of the coal canal, tramway, railways, and the coal industry. The Camerton branch was mainly used for exporting coal from the colliery at Camerton, which closed in 1950. At the peak of coal mining in the early part of the 20th Century, the railway flourished as did the surrounding towns and villages. Over 6,000 people worked in the Somerset coalfields excavating over a million tons of coal a year. |
